Delesprie has taken artistic license by combining two crucial themes in the Bible to create this statue: the fact that Jesus died for our sins, and that He was resurrected, giving His followers hope for eternal life with Him. This action alone is truly a victory for a world suffering from the effects of sin and death.”
Depicted in this sculpture is a rugged cross that has been broken and shattered only moments after the earthquake, when Jesus crossed over into Paradise. The cross is a paradox, symbolizing mankind’s brokenness, pain, suffering, and even death, as well as hope, faith, a new beginning, and the promise of eternal life.
In addition, she wanted to show Jesus willingly surrendering His life to the Father as He prepared to ascend into Heaven. By His sinless life and sacrificial death, Jesus created the only way back home to God. His resurrection thwarted the enemy’s plan. Jesus’ death, what Satan meant for evil, initiated the most glorious moment ever recorded.
Symbolically shown near the bottom of the cross are people sculpted in miniature. Some are in wheelchairs, some are blind, some point that the world is broken, but through the grace of God, each can be used in a mighty way to share the Good News of Jesus.
There is a Christian phrase, “We are under the cross,” which means we are saved by Jesus’ work on the cross at Calvary. Thus the people sculpted under the cross are positioned at the focal point of their faith.
VICTORY is the first sculpture in Delesprie’s new “Redemption Series,” which she uses as tools for witnessing. This original, numbered limited edition statue was created 23 inches in height. Her prayer is that one day by the grace of God, she will have the opportunity to sculpt this piece larger than life for churches and Christian organizations. –By Allison Garner
